Network Management

Network Management is used to monitor the local campus network and its associated services. This is done by using such key tools as network monitoring, traffic analysis, service monitoring, and a configuration archive for network electronics.

    The local server will be operated by Uninett. In addition, company ICT personnel will be given a web interface that provides access to the various tools. The service for local network surveillance currently contains the following tools:

    • Software for surveillance – NAV (Network Administration Visualized)
    • Netflow portfolio (NfSen / nfdump)
    • Service monitoring with Xymon (alternatively NAV)
    • Configuration archive for network electronics (based on tftp)
    • Syslog server
    • Authentication service for network electronics
    • Solution for the administration of access lists (Firewall Builder)

    Who is Network Management for?

    This service is available to everyone who uses Uninett as their Internet service provider – that is to say, those who are connected to the research network.

    The service has a fixed maintainance window: Tuesdays between 10 and 11 a.m.

    This window will primarily be used whenever the need arises for upgrades or restarts due to security updates; these can lead to noticeable operational interference. Such changes will be carried out during this window without further notice. The service might be somewhat unstable during this time period.

    Dialogue with the college and university sector and the prioritization of work related to the service will be handled by the Priority Council for Network and Web-based Services.

    Tjenesten har fast vedlikeholdsvindu hver tirsdag, mellom klokken 10.00 og 11.00.

    Vinduet vil hovedsakelig bli brukt dersom det oppstår behov for oppgraderinger eller omstart som følge av sikkerhetsoppdateringer, og som kan føre til merkbare driftsforstyrrelser. Slike endringer vil bli gjennomført i dette vinduet uten nærmere beskjed. Tjenesten kan oppleves som ustabil i dette tidsrommet.

    Dialog med UH-sektoren og prioritering av arbeidet rundt tjenesten vil bli ivaretatt av prioriteringsråd for nett og nettnære tjenester

    Forutsetninger for Nettadministrasjon

    This service requires a local server to be installed, which must be placed in a secure and well-protected network segment. Subsequently, Uninett must be given adequate access, so that the server can be monitored and operated from Uninett operations center.

    The service also requires being connected to the research network – that is, your company must use Uninett as its Internett service provider.

    Uninett provides technical support for the company’s IT department. For technical support, contact Uninett online at kontakt@uninett.no / +47 73 55 79 00. Opening hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    Service errors may be reported outside of normal business hours at +47 911 27 087.

    Pris for Nettadministrasjon

    For state-run colleges and universities, this service is an integral part of the basic services. 

    Other customers are billed with a start-up cost and an annual fee for operations and further development.
