Uninett’s Real Time Speech service makes it possible to have normal phone conversations via the research network.

    What is Real Time Speech?

    Real Time is based on SIP, and the main delivery is a coordination of phone calls to and from the telephone network via a central, redundant SIP-trunk against the CU sector’s joint telephone service provider. Uninett switched telephone service providers from Telenor to Telia as of December 1, 2018.

    Our solution uses open standards and allows for interaction with products and solutions from different suppliers. To be specific, Uninett’s Real Time Speech service offers solutions for connecting to all the key types in the sector, including Aastra, Alcatel, Avaya, Cisco, Asterisk, Kamailio, Microsoft Lync and Microsoft Skype for Business.

    Reliability of Real Time Speech


    Uninett does its best to ensure that Real Time Speech will experience as little unscheduled downtime as possible, and that there will be redundancy. This means that it would take a great deal before you experience a complete loss of delivery via Real Time Speech. Uptime and redundancy at Telia, including the technical connection between Uninett and Telia, is regulated by the framework agreement with Telia.

    The service is monitored 24/7 by Uninett operations center.

    This service requires being connected to the research network – that is, your company must use Uninett as its Internett service provider.

    It also requires that you subscribe to the Purchasing and Framework Agreements from Unit service before you can use Uninett’s negotiated telephony agreement.

    Real Time Speech can be integrated with every telephone exchange that is used in the college and university sector.

    The company is responsible for local training and user support.
