Skype for Business from Uninett


Through its Coordinated Communication service, Uninett provides Skype for Business to the CU sector. With Skype for Business, the user can conduct web-based meetings with anyone, anywhere, and on any number of devices.

    This tool offers direct messaging, audio and video conversations, online meetings, and file sharing, as well as the sharing of desks, programs and blackboards. Remote control of other people’s desks is also possible. Even those who do not use Skype for Business can participate in the meetings, as long as they have telephone or Internet connectivity. Conversations are protected through authentication and encryption. The user can see the contact’s login status and plan meetings in Outlook. In principle, there will be a limit of one domain per organization.

    Uninett owns and manages the service; as such, it has the mercantile and legal responsibility. Uninett is also responsible for the continued development of the service. This is done in close collaboration with whatever company using the service at any given time.

    UiT Norway’s arctic university and NTNU work together on the technical provisions associated with the service. All customer contact, with the exception of 2nd-line user support, is via Uninett. The Priority Council for Network and Web-based Services will ensure that the service is in line with the customer’s needs.

    The service is set up with redundancy: two physical locations. In the event of a fall-out in the active location, a manual failover is done, which currently can take up to two hours.

    The company itself is responsible for all training and user support.

    Uninett provides technical support to the company’s IT department. The department can access 2nd-lilne user support at its own point of contact for an operational supplier, which is designated once the connection is established.

    Opening hours for this contact point are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    Skype for Business is established with certificates for safe communication; these certificates are supplied by Uninett’s Security Certificates service. Thus customers must also subscribe to this service.

    This service requires being connected to the research network – that is, your company must use Uninett as its Internett service provider.
