Internet access via UNINETT – the Norwegian national research and education network

Connecting to UNINETT’s national research and education network provides high-capacity Internet access to users all over Norway, including Svalbard. UNINETT’s research and education network is transparent and neutral, has an extremely high capacity, and provides users with Internet access to other interconnection points both nationally and internationally, including foreign research and education networks. The research and education network has great redundancy and flexibility. Access to the research and education network is the basis for most other services supplied by UNINETT.
Target group:
Internet access via UNINETT is available to all state universities and university colleges. In addition, other institutions involved in education and/or research, as well as museums and libraries, can connect to the research and education network.
Conditions:

Access to UNINETT’s research and education network normally requires at minimum a 1 Gbit/s Ethernet interface, but scaled-down solutions are available on request. Internet access is transparent, so that end-to-end communication can take place with no impediments or bottlenecks.

So far, all institutions have been provided with as many official IPv4 addresses as they want, provided there is a documented need. The research and education network is furthermore ready for the future; IPv6 and multicast are also offered as standard. Various measurements are taken and traffic stats are collected continually, and the results are made public

Additional access points for load sharing and redundancy, if applicable, can be set up. For particularly heavy applications and/or applications requiring absolute time-delays, dedicated optical connections are available, both nationally and internationally. Specific set-ups for selective traffic routing are available in this regard.
