UNINETT’s videoconferencing service offers infrastructure for multi-party videoconferences with associated support systems. This service comprises several devices working together and is under constant development. As of today, this service is offered as a pilot project.
Target group:
The videoconferencing service is available to anyone whose Internet service provider is UNINETT, i.e. anyone connected to the research and education network. (Some of the support systems require FEIDE log-in. More information can be found in the descriptions for the individual support systems.)

The videoconferencing service is closely related to UNINETT’s other systems for real-time communication, and not all specifications, wishes and interfaces have yet been implemented and tested. This service is being offered as a pilot project and is under constant development.

In order to take advantage of UNINETT’s framework agreements for purchasing videoconferencing equipment, membership in the purchasing collaboration is required.
Status description:
The service is being piloted by some users for a limited time period
Description of the service:

The central component in the videoconferencing service is a so-called multipoint control unit (MCU), which can link several clients (H.323 codecs) together in a videoconference with multiple participants. The MCU also supports linking video from SIP clients (desktop) to multi-party conferences. The use of SIP requires participation in UNINETT real-time. (Technical information about the use of an MCU)

There is also a booking interface available for the MCU, which requires FEIDE authentication. This must be ordered along with the UNINETT conferencing service in the FEIDE customer portal. (Technical information about the booking interface)
Included in the videoconferencing service are also two “Gatekeepers”, which are connected to GDS, and which, among other things, convert E-164 aliases into IP addresses. However, due to a lack of operational responsibility for the international aspect of the Gatekeeper service, the use of Gatekeepers and E-164 aliases is unstable and non-productive. (Technical information about the Gatekeeper service)
UNINETT’s videoconferencing catalogue has not been updated, and we recommend using the videoconferencing catalogues of "easymeeting" or "seevia" (requires registration). For the time being, we are happy to help users update the content in UNINETT’s catalogue. Please send us updated information about your videoconferencing devices.
The costs associated with the central components of the videoconferencing service are currently included in UNINETT’s annual service fee.
